Low Vision Center

The Low Vision and Visual Rehabilitation Service can help individuals with all levels of vision loss ranging from mild visual impairment to legal blindness. Our comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to care provides a team of specialists — from ophthalmologists to optometrists to occupational therapists —who are trained to evaluate your condition and identify an individualized rehabilitation plan to help you maximize remaining functional vision and maintain independence in daily living.

Our office can help people with impaired sight use their remaining sight more effectively. By performing a low vision examination, also called a functional vision assessment, our doctors evaluate how you use your remaining sight in performing daily living tasks. Based on this exam, all our doctors can prescribe the latest customized low vision device or demonstrate technology that can help you make the most of your remaining sight. We have gained a reputation of excellence. We are so proud several retinal groups refer their patients for our low vision care.

Dr. Silberberg had the honor of being appointed the first Director of Low Vision Services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

What Is Low Vision?

Low vision is a reduced level of vision that cannot be fully corrected with conventional glasses. It is not the same as blindness. Unlike a person who is blind, a person with low vision has some useful sight. However, low vision usually interferes with the performance of daily activities, such as reading or driving. A person with low vision may not recognize images at a distance or be able to differentiate colors of similar tones.

Signs & Symptoms

If you have any of the following symptoms – even with your current glasses – Our low vision services can help.

  • Difficulty reading small print
  • Blurred distance vision
  • Sensitivity to glare
  • Poor night vision
  • Difficulty performing daily activities such as walking, cooking
  • Trouble with driving

Detection and Diagnosis

Drs. Silberberg, Mark, and Brill, who specialize in low vision rehabilitation, are skilled in the examination, treatment and management of patients with visual impairments not fully treatable by medical, surgical or conventional eyewear or contact lenses. Each type of low vision problem requires a different therapeutic approach. A thorough examination by our doctors, which will also include tests to determine the patient’s current vision status, will result in the development of a treatment plan.

Treatment

The doctors at An Eye To The Future assess the visual capabilities and evaluate the functional performance within the context of the person’s lifestyle, attitudes, and psychological well-being. Treatment plans are defined in terms of what matters most in a person’s life, and a plan is put into action to solve functional problems through adaptive options and coping strategies.

Treatment plans may include prescription of glasses, specialized optical systems, therapeutic filters, non-optical options, and/or video magnification, and the prescription of rehabilitation therapy to effectively maximize visual functioning for activities of daily living. Therapy may also be prescribed to enhance remaining visual skills and may also include referral to other vision rehabilitation professionals, as indicated.

Macular degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, optic nerve atrophy, retinal detachment, vision loss due to stroke, are some of the conditions that respond to our low vision rehabilitation services.
